FIRST. TIME!

The HAND controls

Get to know the controls on your dirtbike first. Don’t just jump on, grab the throttle, and pop the clutch unless you feel like spending time in the emergency room shortly after your first dirt bike riding attempt. Take the time to learn these things and you will become a better rider much faster. Here’s what you can expect from just about all two wheeled dirt bike machines. Some have electric stuffs, some don’t. For the sake of this tutorial, I’ll keep it thorough.

How to ride a dirtbike

  • The Clutch :

The clutch is THE most important part of your dirtbike and should be viewed as your own personal Jesus. ANYTIME you become afraid or don’t know what to do, SQUEEZE your personal Jesus and I promise you, he will be your savior. Your clutch will DISENGAGE the engine (THE POWER) from any motorcyle. You might still rev the piss out of the bike but it WILL. NOT. MOVE. Put your faith in pulling on that clutch and never forget it. Moving on..

  • The Left Handlebar Switches :

Most often these switches will include high/low beam, a horn, and maybe a kill switch. Whether on the left or right, the kill switch is your second best friend. Getting scared? Kill that motor with the flick of a switch. Done.

  • The Fuel Cap :

This is where the gas goes yo! Most tanks will hold 2-3 gallons and get upwards of 50mpg! Gotta love dirt bikes baby!! You might see a funny tube on most dirtbikes. This is a vent, make sure you have one on your bike unless you want your dirtbike shooting gas in your face. Ewwwwww!

  • The Main Switch :

This can be located in a variety of places and is unique to each bike. Sometimes it’s a key, sometimes a button, sometimes a switch. Without it on, nothing will work. Durrrr

  • The Front Brake :

This control will provide the bike with 70-75% of it’s STOPPING POWER! Grab it too hard and you are going down. Especially if turning or leaning at the same time. Get to know your front brake as it can easily be your best friend or your worst enemy.

  • Right Handlebar Switches :

More often then not, this switch will be where your “Run” switch is located.. Can’t figure out why the bike won’t turn on? This switch is often overlooked. Doyyyy

THE RIGHT FOOT CONTROL

dirt bike rear brake

This is your rear brake and is controlled by your right foot. Learn to use it to stop, intentionally slide the rear around on trails or into turns and you’ll be using it correctly. Use your front and rear brakes together and feel for the balance that brings you to safe stops.

Subscribing you my YOUTUBE channel will also help you come to safe stops : )

THE LEFT FOOT CONTROL

dirt-bike-shifterWhat’s this Funny Looking Thing??

1 DOWN, 3,4 or 5 UP – This is how they all work but you’ll have to get to know this on your own. It’s entirely based on just experiencing what a gear shifter feels like when being used. Push it down repeatedly and you’ll find FIRST gear. Pull it up a 1/2 click and you’ll find NEUTRAL. Start riding in first and pull it up, and you’ll be in SECOND gear and so on. Learning the shifter can only be done by actually doing it but your first gear will always be a downward click.

THE kick starter lever

How to Start a Dirt Bike Pictures 005That funny little lever is what starts your bike if you don’t have an electric starter. Flip it out, put the bike in NEUTRAL and place your foot on her. Gently pump the lever until it builds resistance and your engine will be in the optimal part of it’s rotation for starting. Give her a good hard deployment and she should start. Sometimes this equates to a little bit of throttle, a little bit of pre-throttle priming, or having the choke on. All kick style bikes are different but the easy ones are my favorite.. Trust me, kick starting a bike in the jungle after a full day of riding is boring to say the least.

2 Stroke Dirt Bikes -VS- 4 Stroke Dirt Bikes

To avoid too much controversy, let me say there is no “right” choice when deciding what engine style will be best for you. Instead, please allow me to speak in metaphor.

2-stroke-vs-4-stroke-dirt-bike

  • A 4 stroke dirt bike is kinda like a high class prostitute that will treat you well, if you treat her with respect and don’t look down on her.
  • A 2 stroke dirt bike is kinda like a sexy ass Vegas prostitute on crack. She cares not about your respect and is instead interested in how long your silly ass can ride her without loosing your shite.
  • A 4 stroke dirt bike will reliably purr while singing you a sweet song that you know the words to.
  • A 2 stroke dirt bike thinks singing is for pussies and will scream until you realize her screaming is the most beautiful song you’ve ever heard.
  • A 4 stroke dirt bike will get mad at you then tell you she’s gonna slap you in the face.
  • A 2 stroke dirt bike will slap you in the face, then tell you, you just got slapped in the face, then tease you if you don’t agree to being slapped in the face again.
  • A 4 stroke dirt bike will show you her power and how to use it in any situation with the confidence akin to the president of the free world.
  • A 2 stroke dirt bike will show you her power, then randomly surprise you with more. Once in control,  she will make you feel like god on two wheels.
  • A 4 stroke dirt bike will wake the neighbors.
  • A 2 stroke dirt bike will wake the neighborhood.
  • A 4 stroke dirt bike will seduce you.
  • A 2 stroke dirt bike will rape you.

Both are fine choices in first bikes. Just respect the power that’s under your legs and don’t get cocky cause she’ll show you who’s boss.
